Abstract:
The achievements of medicine at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century were essential, as medicine underwent fundamental transformations through the development of all branches of medical science and the emergence of new disciplines (biological chemistry, microbiology, radiology, histology, embryology, etc.). Infectious and contagious diseases, as well as severe epidemics that had generated a heightened epidemic and endemic situation, also drew the attention of physicians at the local level. As a result, Victor Babeș, together with his collaborators, students and colleagues, achieved remarkable success in identifying new methods of investigation in clinical medicine, correlated with the development of research in pharmacology. A pathologist of European stature, Victor Babeș – the founder of Romanian anatomy and histopathology-earned the admiration of numerous collaborators and former students through his research devoted to leprosy, tuberculosis, rabies, typhoid fever, tetanus, pellagra, syphilis, cancer and other diseases. Many of these individuals, young professors at the Bucharest Faculty of Medicine, made use of Babeș’s scientific expertise to conduct their own research and produce scientific works or to establish schools and institutes in other university centers across the country. Colleagues, student-disciples, collaborators and friends-some of them regarded as “spiritual pupils” of Victor Babeș – worked together, drawn by his scientific competence. Among them were Nicolae Kalinderu, Mihail Petrini Galatz, George Assaky, Ion Nanu Muscel, Mihail Manicatide, Gheorghe Marinescu, Vasile Sion, Constantin Bacaloglu, Constantin Parhon, Constantin Levaditi and Emil C. Crăciun.
