Abstract:

The paper proposes an analysis of the commemorative ceremony held on 8 November 1918 in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Iași, occasioned by the presence of the skull of Michael the Brave in this sacred space, within the complex context of the end of the First World War and the approaching Great Union. The event, which took place on the feast of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, intertwined the religious dimension of ritual with the civic-national affirmation of Romanian identity.
Through the Divine Liturgy celebrated in the presence of the baldachin on which Marie of Romania placed the voivode’s head, followed by the sermon delivered by Metropolitan Pimen Georgescu, attended by representatives of the Iași and national elites, the ceremony transformed the memory of the unifying ruler into a living symbol of unity and hope.
The study also examines the role of Queen Marie in placing the skull of Michael the Brave upon the old baldachin of Saint Parascheva, crafted by the sculptor Constantin Mihai Babic, as a space of urban sacrality and of the consolidation of communal sentiment.
Thus, the 1918 commemoration emerges as a moment of convergence between faith, historical memory, and royalty, inscribed within the tradition of Iași’s urban celebrations marked by profound symbolic resonance.
