Abstract:

In common understanding, a portrait is a work that represents an individual by emphasizing specific, identifiable features. The process itself implies an interaction between artist and model, and the relationship is an objective one, bearing socio-economic connotations that contribute to defining the conditions under which the portrait is created; through these conditions, the image that the model or patron wishes to present to the world and to transmit to posterity is constructed.
The primary function of a portrait is to depict an individual, and in certain cases the importance of the sitters has led to the production of copies of the works for various reasons, independent of the original moment of creation. One such example is the portrait of Prince Gheorghe Bibescu executed by Paul Petrovits. Conceived as a head-of-state portrait in a standardized posture suitable for official display, it was established, nearly two centuries later, that the work had been copied and altered, in the absence of any documented information regarding the circumstances that led to this situation. One version of the work is held in the Painting Collection of the M.M.B. in the 1930 catalogue of the state Pinacotheca, a similar work is recorded, attributed to an unknown author and with the subject incorrectly identified. Another portrait of Gheorghe Bibescu, signed and dated by Paulus Petrovitz, belongs to Studiourile Cinematografice Buftea.
