Abstract:

Through their splendor, the selectivity and number of participants, as well as their social implications and effects, balls constituted the most important events of Romanian high society in the 19th century. True spectacles of elite society, they provided an ideal setting for entertainment, social interaction, and self-representation, and facilitated matrimonial strategies. Secondarily, balls also constituted fertile ground for political intrigues and conspiracies. The intense and complex social life sustained by these events, together with the exceptional pomp displayed on such occasions, endowed balls with remarkable popularity, resonating in the collective mentality, in memoir literature, fiction, and the contemporary press. Balls were favored topics of conversation, with news of this kind spreading from the most select salons of the capital to the modest homes of the rural lesser boyar class. Their modernizing role should not be overlooked. Whether referring to the ambiance and amenities of the dance hall, fashion, music, dance styles, manners, education, or the language of society, the transition between East and West was extremely visible and rapid in the ballroom. The modernizing effect of these social events was also reflected in urban life, which they energized socially, enriched culturally, and stimulated economically, while simultaneously conferring brilliance and local color. Whether private or public, they also offered children the opportunity to participate in social life, where socialization was the primary concern. Following the model of elite spaces of socialization and entertainment, popular clubs and dance halls were established; Western balls and dances were imitated, assimilated, and gradually consumed by all categories of the urban population.

The collections of the Bucharest Municipality Museum offer the possibility of illustrating this narrative with images of heritage objects specific to this theme.
