Abstract:
In the rich collection of the Bucharest Municipality Museum, there is also the Registry of Documents of the Brancovian Hospital, founded in 1835 by Safta Brâncoveanu, nee Balș, the wife of the late Ban Grigore Brâncoveanu (1767-1832), a descendant of the illustrious Brâncoveanu family. It was one of the most important medical institutions of modern Romania, which, for 146 years (1838–1984), provided services to the numerous patients who crossed its threshold, both from the Capital and from other parts of the country. In this Registry, 97 documents written in Romanian using Cyrillic characters and two documents in Greek are recorded, all relating to properties, spread across various locations in Wallachia, that came into the possession of the illustrious family in different ways. These include documents issued by rulers such as Vlad Călugărul, Radu the Great, Vlad Vintilă, Radu Paisie, Michael the Brave, Radu Șerban, Matei Basarab, Antonie Vodă of Popești, among others, as well as records from representatives of the Church, hieromonk Ghenadie or Pandeleimon, abbots of Sadova Monastery. Additionally, there are documents from ordinary people, such as Stan Șovăilă, “a man about 90 years old” from Comoșteni; Radu Cojocea; Radu from Mărcești; Tudora; Ganea; Tudor (Toader) Zalomit from Brașov, as well as records issued by various institutions, including the Princely Divan or the Divan of Craiova, the Great Chancellery of Justice, the Department of Four, the Caimacam of Craiova, or the Commercial Court. At the end of the Registry is recorded the Internal Administration of the
medical institution, which regulated the “duties” of the steward, the doctor, the surgeon, the assistant surgeon, the secretary, the caregivers of relatives, and the laundresses, as well as the rights and obligations of the patients. The princely documents from the 15th-17th centuries, originally written in Church Slavonic, were “translated” or “rendered into Romanian” by Atanasie (Anastasie) Nenovici, “deputy of the Bulgarians”, Vasile N. Nenovici, and the Slovene teachers Lupp, Costandin, and Vasilie from the Royal Slovene School at St. Gheorghe Vechi Church in Bucharest.
