Abstract:

Romanian art has a considerable contribution from foreign artists who come and work in the Romanian Principalities, some temporarily, others end up permanently settling here. Painting in the first half of the 19th century and, much later, sculpture benefited from the contribution of foreigners that came from the Austro-Hungarian, German, Serbian, Italian, Polish, Czech provinces. They respond to the orders of the Romanian boyars eager to immortalize themselves on canvas according to the Western Europe model. In addition to the large number of portraits made, artists from abroad will prepare the artistic background for Romanian painters who, once encouraged by the environment created by foreigners, will begin to assert themselves beyond the mural art practiced in churches. Artists such as Henri de Mondoville, Joseph August Schoefft, Mauriciu Löeffler, Giovanni Schiavoni, Anton Chladek will become teachers for young local talents, whether they are employed in schools where drawing is taught, or they will wellcome students in their workshops. The impact of foreign artists from the first half of the 19th century is multifaceted. They created a favorable environment for the development of secular art in the Romanian space by the offer to the noblemen’s requests for portraits, but also by contributing to the formation of a local educational environment.
