Abstract:

: At the beginning of the 19th century, there were scientific developments in many fields and the image of a bright medical future was foreseen. Doctors and scientists applied innovative methods of treatment or medical interventions with admirable results, and new substances treated diseases that past doctors did not dream of curing. In the communities they manage to make the huge leap from the belief that the disease is a form of divine punishment to the implementation of prophylactic methods through instructions, recommendations and life-saving solutions. However, the biggest challenges were the waves of infectious diseases with great capacity for infection and higher mortality rate. But the 19th century progress of medicine led to the development of solutions for these crises and, finally, to the sanitary organization of cities and states. In the 19th century, Bucharest faced several health crises. Infectious diseases such as plague, Asian cholera, yellow fever, typhoid, typhoid fever, smallpox, scarlet fever, measles, diphtheria, croup, pneumonia, dysentery, tuberculosis and rabies had caused epidemics that doctors had tried to counteract with various methods: sanitation of inhabited spaces and individuals, individual and city quarantine, vaccination, analysis of „hygienic agents” such as food, soil, corpses, houses, cities’ healthiness, prison conditions and, by the end of the century, the evolution of the entire prophylactic system with the new microbiological discoveries. The formation of a Romanian medical school and the attraction of specialists trained in European schools of medicine led to the organization of specialized institutions and the elaboration of sanitary laws meant to solve the medical crises in Bucharest and in the rest of the country.
