Abstract:

The Romanian Revolution of December 1989 was a complex phenomenon, part of a chain of political changes that took place in Central and Eastern Europe between 1988 and 1991. Romanian and foreign historiography has approached the subject from many perspectives: historical, social, political. Unlike other surrounding countries part the Soviet Bloc, where the regime change was peaceful, in Romania the change was violent. In this paper we aim to present the news and comments made by the foreign and Romanian press in the days of December 1989, regarding the events that took place in Romania. On the events in Timisoara that took place on December 16-17, 1989, foreign media informed Western states and even Romanians in the country through the radio stations Voice of America and Free Europe, the internal press being strictly controlled. The print media, the public radio and television in Romania presented the events after the escape of Nicolae Ceausescu on December 22, 1989. The newspaper Scînteia, the press body of the Romanian Communist Party, released a special issue on that day, titled Scînteia Poporului, a sheet distributed free of charge. Two more numbers appeared, after which the paper changed its name to Adevărul. The press was an important factor in the development of the Revolution. It created a state of mind and constantly informed the people about the progress of the Revolution and about the changes that were taking place.
